A BIG thing called HFCS

A BIG thing called HFCS

Posted on 02. Jul, 2009 by Sarah in Healthy Living

Ok, I have been thinking (well, I know that didn’t come as a surprise) all week on what I am going to feature today. So, are you ready? Helmets on? Shoes tied? I am going to feature something that is a pet peeve of mine. And it is……High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). WHAT?!! Are you kidding? I got ready for that? Yes, my friend, you did. And let me tell you why.

HFCS is in the food you eat & the stuff you drink. With out getting all high tech on the stats with you. Let me just say that it is VERY bad for you. (Note, I will be writing a whole article on this topic & will post on my blog). Next time you are at the store, look at what you have in your hand and you will see this ingredient in the first line of the list. HFCS is in crackers, ice cream, bread, cookies, canned corn, tomato sauce & yogurt, just to name a few.

This ingredient is a culprit in so many health issues we as a nation have. It is a cheap filler & company’s use to prolong the shelf life of food for one. Well, that filler is doing the opposite for your body & health. It is not prolonging your life. It is making your life & health short. I don’t about you, but I want to have a long, happy & healthy life! What can you do ASAP?

So, two REALLY easy & simple changes. Shop at health food stores. Read the ingredients. Be informed!

So, I urge, no BEG you to look at the box in your hand and become REALLY aware what you are putting in your body. It does more good then you might think!!!! Promise.

  1. you are so right there Sarah. HFCS is one of the big things that really stops people burning their belly fat. Reading the labels is a must – and forget the soft drinks/sodas.

It’s not in the bread or the yogurt I eat. But who eats canned corn? Corn Syrup in corn… weird :) Ice cream and cookies? People eat a lot of junk. They should be less worried about singling out an ingredient and more concerned with what they put in their body as a whole. If it needs an artificial sweeter or a manufactured sweeter then you should probably think twice about eating it in the first place.

Wow! This is the motivation I needed to start really being aware of whether HFCS is in the stuff I eat. Way to raise awareness!

HFCS is a huge issue and a filler as you say, Sarah, and you are correct to raise awareness of it. It is in many many breads, even those which claim to be ‘healthy.’ ALL mainstream catsups and BBQ sauces have it, and many salad dressings especially ‘low-fat’ ones, which I never buy or order at restaurants for this reason. I’d rather have a smaller portion of a real food, than ones loaded with this manufactured junk. Thanks. I have an article linked on the sidebar of my website regarding same issue. Good luck to you with your run and training.

  5. it’s amazing all of the foods beverages that contain that crap… i find that you can usually avoid it by not buying anything in a box or bottle! stick to WHOLE foods. Check out this post I did about a kids lunch at my daughters school…

    Sarah,

Wow – you are amazing! And I love your video clips. You are so right about processed foods – I eat very little of anything out of the box anymore since I realized that most of my weight gain was from too many carbohydrates and not enough fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep on keepin on girl, you are truly inspiring!

Would you mind leaving a guest comment on my blog? http://MyLose-Weight-Now.com? Thanks ever so much – in between your training, that is : ).

I’m going to take a quote out of Mark Sissons ‘The Primal Blueprint’ book about HFCS.

“It has been well-established that HFCS is even more lipogenic (fat-promoting) than glucose, since it is readily converted into either glucose or triglycerides in the liver. Diets high in HFCS have been shown to substantially increase triglyceride levels, increase risk of obesity (particularly in kids, since their soda consumption is so excessive in relation to their body weight), and contribute to the development of serious health problems like type 2 diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).”

    HFCS is the devil.

it’s not in the food I eat, because I cleared it out of my house 22 months ago! And counting! And I have the size smaller jeans to prove it…
